If you have an aging loved one who needs a little extra help getting around the house or taking care of himself or herself, you may be wondering whether elderly health care is a viable option for you. Most people tend to think of home care for the elderly to be an expensive proposition. They hear the term and immediately assume that they can’t afford it, that they shouldn’t even consider it.
That’s one reason why so many families try to take it upon themselves to provide the right level of care for their mother or father, or both. If you are currently taking on the burden of caring for an elderly loved one, but it is causing you more stress in your life or family obligations, then it may be time to at least consider the prospect of elderly health care.
There are a number of options that are available, depending on the level of care that is required. You could certainly choose to have your mother or father move into a nursing home or other similar facility, but this is generally reserved for individuals who require a high level of nursing care. This could be due to a serious injury or major health crisis, but the conditions and quality of interpersonal interaction and care is not ideal for people who are high functioning, but who may simply need some assistance.
You could also choose to have your mother or father move into assisted living. This would allow them to continue living independently, but there would be staff members who would be available to assist them with some basic living needs, such as reminding them to take medication, helping them get to the doctor’s appointment, and other challenges.
There are also in-home care providers who can either come to your mother or father’s home for a few hours a day to help them bathe, take care of themselves, cook, or do other basic activities. You could also hire a live-in care provider. Depending on how much help your mother or father needs, you may require a more around the clock professional care provider.
Nursing homes are expensive. Assisted living generally requires that your parent move into a new home. In-home care is one of the most affordable options and it can alleviate a great deal of stress for you. Only you can determine whether elderly health care services are a viable option for you, but most people learn that they are much more affordable than they could have thought possible.
