When you’re planning to travel with an elderly loved one, you’re going to need to plan ahead. While you usually do make certain plans and provisions when you’re traveling, such as lodging and other accommodations, there are some things that you should certainly take into consideration when it comes to traveling with an elderly loved one, especially if he or she requires any type of elder care.
While your loved one may have home care for the elderly, that doesn’t mean that they can’t travel with you. Many seniors travel, even though they may have certain health conditions or limitations. It’s important to understand what those limitations are and that the more that you plan ahead, the safer your loved one will be during the entire trip.
One of the most important things to plan for is any prescription medications that your loved one takes. You want to make sure that your loved one has enough to last him or her for the entire trip. If they are going to run out while they’re away from home, for example they’re planning on being away from home for longer than a week, then you’ll want to see if you can refill the prescription early, or if not, where you could have it refilled where you’re going to be.
You’ll also want to plan for bathroom breaks if you’re going to be driving a long distance to reach your destination. Your elderly loved one may not have the same ability to ‘hold it’ for hundreds of miles like they could when they were younger.
Depending on whether your loved one requires any type of assistance in the bathroom, you may want to make sure that the hotel or other lodging accommodations has handicap accessibility in their rooms, especially the shower and the toilet.
Finally, if your loved one requires any other level of elder care, such as someone to assist him or her with dressing or anything else, and you’re not going to be able to accommodate them during this trip, then you may want to consider arrangements to have elder care services travel with your loved one.
Traveling with someone who relied on elder care doesn’t have to be complicated. All it takes is a bit of foresight and planning ahead. When you want to enjoy a nice, relaxing trip with your loved one, plan ahead and everything should be great.
