When you are a family caregiver you often have more than one person to look after. You may have an elderly parent (or two) as well as a spouse and some children and yourself. That’s a lot of responsibility. When everyone is well and things are running smoothly you might be able to keep up with everything but it will probably be very busy most days. When some of the people are sick it’s another story!
The demands of caregiving can certainly get overwhelming. You may feel you have little or no control over the situation. If this level of stress continues and you don’t do something to alleviate it, it can and will take a toll on your health.
If you have both sick and well people to take care of, you are going to need some help. You can’t do everything all by yourself all of the time. Don’t be afraid to call in the troops! You can find some help by calling:
- A neighbor can help you out. Especially if you have a really close neighbor that’s been your friend for a long time. If your elderly loved one has a neighbor that can come over for a few hours and give you a break that’s really helpful too.
- A family member. Maybe someone who doesn’t always have the opportunity to help on a regular basis but can come and help you while you’ve got sick family to tend to.
- A friend. Sometimes friends offer and we really don’t know what to tell them to do so we say we don’t need any help. Stop doing that! Let them help. If you’re not sure, ask them for ideas. Maybe they will surprise you.
- A home care agency. If your elderly loved one had an in home care provider to look after them, it would free up your time and energy to take care of other family members especially if some of them are sick.
Remember that amidst everything, you have to be able to take good care of yourself too. If you are the hub of the wheel and it’s because of you that everything turns, if you get sick what’s going to happen? You need to have back-up in case. Who can you call to take your place for a few hours or a few days until you get on your feet again?
Staying as healthy as you can will ensure you don’t catch every bug that’s going around. You can stay healthy by participating in regular exercise, eating nutritious and well-balanced meals and regularly taking time out for yourself. It’s important to keep up your social life as well. Go out with friends once in a while; enjoy a good laugh. It will do wonders for your health and well-being.
